To find the version of your Linux Distribution
$ cat /etc/*release
CentOS release 4.8 (Final)
To find the version of your Linux Kernel
$ uname -a
Linux your-host-name 2.6.9-89.ELsmp #1 SMP Mon Jun 22 12:31:33 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
